Handtekening van Johann Sebastian Bach

calov signature The Calov Bible (Commentary)

The importance of the so called Bach Bible (6 parts, bound in 3 volumes) lies in the penned entries found on more than 250 of its pages. By far the most common are underlinings and/or marginal markings ('dashes' - streepjes in de kantlijn), highlighting sections of Luther's and Calov’s theological commentary. They show us that the Bach was interested in the biblical text as explained and apllied by Luther. (Bach interesseerde zich bij het lezen dus ... voor de bijbeltekst zoals die door Luther werd uitgelegd en toegepast. To get access to what Bach deemed worthwhile, remarkable, I published the texts from highlighted by Bach in the English translation from prof. Ellis Finger (last part of Howard Cox's critical edition of Bach's Calov Bible (Ann Arbor 1985).
